Fundamentals of Biology I
Grundlagen der Biologie I
This 1st year Laboratory course introduces the students to the basic experimental techniques used in the classical and modern molecular biosciences. In the first year (Praktikum GL BioI) the students will be introduced into the basic concepts and methods of Microbiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 12 consecutive course days.
Fundamentals of Biology I
Grundlagen der Biologie I
This 1st year Laboratory course introduces the student to the entire range of classical and modern molecular biosciences. During this course (Praktikum GL BioI) the students will do three praktikum days in:- Biochemistry- Cell Biology I- Microbiology- Plant Anantomy & Ecology(total of 12 experiments)Each experiment takes one full day.
Fundamentals of Biology II
Grundlagen der Biologie II
This introductory Laboratory course introduces the student to the entire range of classical and modern molecular biosciences. In the second year (Praktikum GL Bio II) the students will perform three praktikum days in:- Bioinformatics- Plant Physiology- Genetics and- Cell Biology II.(total of 12 experiments)Each experiment takes one full day.
The lecture conveys the fundamental concepts underlying multicellularity with an emphasis on the molecular basis of multicellular biological systems and their functional integration into coherent wholes. The structural and functional specialization in multicellular organisms will be discussed by highlighting common and specific functions in fungi, plants, and animals (including humans).
Microbial Gene Technology
Mikrobielle Gentechnologie
Introduction to selected prokaryotic and eukaryotic model microorganisms and application of methods which are used as tools for answering questions in molecular biology.
Seminars by invited speakers covering selected topics in microbiology.Students enrolled in this seminar series for course credit will take in-person quizzes immediately after each seminar, and submit summary essays every three weeks.
The course offers an introduction into the molecular biology of fungi by participation in a current research project on Molecular Defense Mechanisms of Fungi. The performed experiments, in conjunction with accompanying seminars enables the students to answer questions regarding central aspects of innate defense mechanisms and the life style of multicellular fungi.

Practical Course in Microbiology
Praktikum Mikrobiologie
Basic principles of the handling of microorganisms (MO) - Detection of MO in the environment - Morphology and diagnostics of MO - Morphology and physiology of fungi - Antimicrobial agents - Microbial genetics - Bacterial physiology and interactions - Microbial pest control
The lecture will provide insight into the current knowledge and research on selected aspects of the fungal lifestyle. The various topics will be presented by experts in their fields. The lecture builds on the basic understanding of the fungal lifestyle taught as part of the lecture 'Fundamentals in Biology III-Multicellularity' as well as various blockcourses during the Biology bachelor.
This course deals with selected topics in fungal reproduction and the interaction of fungi with other organisms. First, specific examples of the different reproductive strategies within the fungal kingdom are discussed. Special focus is on the molecular basis of mating type definition. In the second part, examples of symbiontic and antagonistic interactions of fungi with insects are presented.
Systematic and Ecological Biology I
Systematische und ökolog. Biologie I
Organisms and environment: terrestrial insects, insect-plant interactions, insect behaviour,
