Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:28:59
Abstract
This introductory Laboratory course introduces the student to the entire range of classical and modern molecular biosciences. In the first year (present laboratory course) the student does 4 experiments in General Biology (introductions to Botany, Zoology), 4 experiments in Biochemistry, and 4 experiments in Molecular Biology. Each experiment takes one full day.
Objective
Introduction to theoretical and experimental biology Web-Address for general Practicum-info: http://www.biol.ethz.ch/education/praktikum/GLBioI
Content
The class is divided into three blocks: general biology, biochemistry and molecular biology. General biology: - Anatomy of mouse & histology - Anatomy of plants - Meiosis, reproduction of angiosperms & Genetics (Arabidopsis, Neurospora, Drosophila) - Ecology of plants Biochemistry: - Protein purification - Electrophoresis and protein chromatography - Enzymatic activity - Enzyme kinetics and protein detection Molecular biology: - Gene technology for stuctural analysis (plasmids, restriction analysis; PCR, DNA ligation, DNA sequencing) - Redoxpotential and protein stability - pH-dependence, enzyme catalysis - Protein expression, protein spectroscopy, protein folding, protein modification - Three dimensional structure of proteins, protein crystallography
