Abstract

The lecture gives an introduction into the field of Mycology. It provides an overview of the fungal lifestyle.

Objective

At the end of the course, the student is able to… …explain the hallmarks of the fungal lifestyle and compare them to the lifestyle of animals and plants. ...to explain the phylogenetic relationships of fungi with the other organisms as well as with each other ('fungal tree of life'). …to explain the building plan of the fungal cell and the fungal mycelium and their various differentiations. …to explain the structure of the fungal genomes and their protection mechanisms. …to distinguish and explain the different reproduction strategies of fungi. …to explain the correlation between nutrition mode and ecology of fungi including the various fungal symbioses and their evolution. …to explain the opportunities and challenges of the application of fungi in food production and biotechnology.

Content

The lecture focuses on the following topics within Mycology: 1. Phylogeny, Systematics and Characteristic Features 2. Morphology and Physiology 3. Genomics and Genetics 4. Reproductionstrategies 5. Nutrition mode, Ecology and Evolution 6. Applications
