The general theme of this course is the effect of abiotic stress factors on the molecular, cellular and morphological level of the plant. Abiotic stress factors will be discussed, which are highly important for agriculture in various climatic regions. Methods to quantify and to improve the tolerance toward abiotic stress will be demonstrated.

Following the goal of an increased agricultural biodiversity, species such as buckwheat but also medicinal plants might become more important in future. The colloquium “Challenges in Plant Sciences” is a core class of the Zurich-Basel Plant Science Center's PhD program. The colloquium introduces participants to the broad spectrum of plant sciences within the network. The course offers the opportunity to approach interdisciplinary topics in the field of plant sciences.
The colloquium introduces students to the disciplines in plant sciences and provides integrated knowledge from the molecular level to ecosystems and from basic research to applications, making use of the synergies between the different research groups of the PSC. The colloquium offers a unique chance to approach interdisciplinary topics as a challenge in the field of plant sciences.
The biological requirements for successful and sustainable crops are looked at from biological, agronomical, and the physio-genetic level. Climatic requirements, their status of biological and agronomic adaptation, the range of adaptation with regard to the consistency and quantity of the yield and quality-related aspects of the product.
The genetic base for many crops has become quite narrow and it is of utmost importance to maintain and manage a maximum number of alleles for world food crops as well as for minor neglected crops.
In the module "Integrative Plant Sciences", which consists of the online course and seminar "Plant Response to Stress" (PRESS) and the colloquium "Challenges in Plant Sciences" , the focus lies on interdisciplinarity, ranging from molecular biology and biochemistry to ecosystem research, and an integrated understanding of plants in their environments.
