Abstract
The general theme of this course is the effect of abiotic stress factors on the molecular, cellular and morphological level of the plant. Abiotic stress factors will be discussed, which are highly important for agriculture in various climatic regions. Methods to quantify and to improve the tolerance toward abiotic stress will be demonstrated.
Objective
At the end of the course, the students are able to analyze marginal growth conditions for crops and they will understand the effect of abiotic stress factors on the genetic and physiology of the plant. Furthermore, they are able to develop strategies to obtain varieties with improved stress tolerance.
Content
Abiotic stress factors are responsible for considerable losses in crop yield. In order to increase the stress tolerance of crops, the genetic and physiological background of stress tolerance must be understood. Furthermore, conditions must be identified, which expose crop plants to abiotic stress. Therefore, in this course the effects of abiotic stress on the molecular biology and the physiology will be studied, marginal growth conditions in various climatic regions of the world will be identified, and methods will be shown that improve the stress tolerance by molecular biological methods or by breeding.
