Genetic Resources
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:23:38
Abstract
The genetic base for many crops has become quite narrow and it is of utmost importance to maintain and manage a maximum number of alleles for world food crops as well as for minor neglected crops.
Objective
At the end of the course the students are able to describe and to judge genetic resources with regard to their potential value and to the requirements for their maintenance. They will be required to define accordingly the conditions for a model crop.
Content
Modern plant breeding achieved a concentration of agronomically valuable genes into crops. In turn the genetic base for many crops has become quite narrow and it is of utmost importance to maintain and manage a maximum number of alleles for world food crops as well as for minor neglected crops. For doing this it is essential to understand how a genetic resource is defined, how it can be assessed and maintained, each in direct relation to the (reproductive) biology of a crop. On this basis concepts can be discussed and improved how to analyze and judge genetic resources and how potentially to utilize them.
