Building Research and Conservation Science II
Bauforschung und Denkmalpflege II
Conservation, building research and conservation science themes are discussed in the framework of long-term cultural constants.
Building in constancy: Building Existence of ETH Zurich
Bauen im Bestand: Der Baubestand der ETH Zürich
Building in constancy requires a profound knowledge of technical-structural aspects, as well as historical, architectural aspects. Building research and conservation sciences help to unterstand historical and modern methods of construction. On an existing building, methods of building analysis and documentation will be trained in order to develop concepts for dealing with the buildings’ substance.
Building in constancy: The ETH Main Building by Gottfried Semper
Bauen im Bestand: Das ETH Hauptgebäude von Gottfried Semper
"Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment" - preservation, renovation or modification - requires a profound knowledge of technical and structural aspects, as well as a solid basis in historical and architectural subjects. Building research and conservation sciences help to unterstand historical and modern day methods of construction and technical tradition.
Building within the Existing
Bauen im Bestand: Das Maschinenbaulaboratorium der ETH Zürich von Otto Rudolf Salvisberg
The further development of existing architecture requires a methodological basis different from that required for new building. Planning processes begin with an analysis of the fabric, the contexts and qualities of existing buildings; proceed to evaluate the historical and future dynamics; and develop on this basis concepts for potential updating, particularly with a long-term perspective.
Conservation Science I
Denkmalpflege I
Within three elective courses the students need to fulfill an elective work (seminar work). Elective works serve the independent way of dealing with the contents of the according elective course.
Conservation Science I: Collecting Delusion
Denkmalpflege I: Sammelwahn
This seminar deals with a wide range of topics from treasure chambers of the 17th century and their classification systems to modern collections. The meaning of archives as places of sourced out knowledge will be discussed in the following contexts: What is being preserved and filed and why?It is planned to compile a collection of different materials in course of the seminar.
Conservation Science I: Mathematicians Lounge in the ETH Main Building
Denkmalpflege I: Mathematikerlounge im ETH Hauptgebäude
Interdisciplinary design for the built environment is completely different from designing new houses - projects start with the analysis of the excisting instead of starting with the idea. Processes for the integration of new concepts into existing architecture require an understanding of methods of historical construction and production.

Conservation Science II: "Rubber, Asbestos, Turf?" Modern Materials and their Aging
Denkmalpflege II: "Gummi, Asbest, Torf?" Moderne Stoffe und ihre Alterung.
A main aim of this seminar is the mediation of competence in analyzing and interpretation in the following fields: Knowledge on and of artefacts, on the dynamic of systems, historic contexts and on the history of theory- and knowledge. The seminar asks for the student’s active involvement. In addition, this elective course can also be elaborated as a major written thesis.
Conservation Science II: Chemical Laboratory of ETH by Bluntschli and Lasius
Denkmalpflege II: Chemisches Laboratorium der ETH von Bluntschli und Lasius
Processes for the integration of new concepts into existing architecture require completely different methods than for designing new houses. It needs an understanding of methods of historical construction and production and, in addition, knowledge about the meaning and „grammar“ of historical architecture.

The Elective Subject Degree Tests are meant to enable a deeper level of individual engagement with the contents of the elective subjects. All topics of electives can be elaborated into elective degree tests.
Construction Knowledge
Konstruktionswissen im Bestand
This elective course puts the architect’s knowledge of construction in the focus of interest and deals with possibilities of knowledge transfer as the basis for future treatment of existing built structures. This elective course is orientated at one of the key aspects of the Institute’s research topics („Construction Knowledge“) and can also be elaborated as a written thesis.
Construction Knowledge
Konstruktionswissen im Bestand: Entwerferische Verfahren am Beispiel von Jean Prouvè
