Abstract

Interdisciplinary design for the built environment is completely different from designing new houses - projects start with the analysis of the excisting instead of starting with the idea. Processes for the integration of new concepts into existing architecture require an understanding of methods of historical construction and production.

Objective

Based on a building analysis, the process of designing for the built environment will be trained. Part of this is the development of a methodical vocabulary investigating how design could result from processes of analysis. In autumn term 07 the Institute of Historic Building Research and Conservation offers a design project, together with the Masters Course "Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment", based on building analysis and documentation of an existing building. Topic of the autumn term 07 will presumably be the main building of ETH built by Gottfried Semper.
