Conservation Science II: Chemical Laboratory of ETH by Bluntschli and Lasius
Denkmalpflege II: Chemisches Laboratorium der ETH von Bluntschli und Lasius
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:30:00
Abstract
Processes for the integration of new concepts into existing architecture require completely different methods than for designing new houses. It needs an understanding of methods of historical construction and production and, in addition, knowledge about the meaning and „grammar“ of historical architecture.
Objective
Based on a building analysis, the process of designing for the built environment will be trained. Part of this is the development of a methodical vocabulary investigating how design could result from processes of analysis. In spring term 08 the Institute of Historic Building Research and Conservation offers a design project, together with the Masters Course „Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment“, based on building analysis and documentation of an existing building. Topic of the spring term 08 will presumably be the chemical laboratory of ETH built by Bluntschli & Lasius.
