Abstract
The further development of existing architecture requires a methodological basis different from that required for new building. Planning processes begin with an analysis of the fabric, the contexts and qualities of existing buildings; proceed to evaluate the historical and future dynamics; and develop on this basis concepts for potential updating, particularly with a long-term perspective.
Objective
All planning processes for intervention will be carried out on the basis of an analysis of the existing structures. Instruments used to describe the qualities of an area typically investigated will be conveyed; for instance, research into sources, critical evaluation of existing plans, methods of construction research, investigation into the age of buildings. Strategies for the future and exemplary design concepts will be developed from these analyses.
Content
Topics of lectures and exercises are as follows: • Methods of analysis and description of structures and buildings, critical assessment of sources • Contextual knowledge of the buildings under investigation and their historical development • Investigation into historical dynamics also from a strategic perspective (real estate development, builder’s decisions, planning horizons) • Analysis of structures according to age exemplary buildings • Conflicts and risks pertaining to the long-term development of buildings and the limitations of policies that affect their value • Design strategies with a long-term perspective; windows of opportunity for developments In the fall semester 2008, the object of research will probably be the machine laboratory (used by ETH Zurich) at Hochschulquartier Zentrum.
