Abstract
"Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment" - preservation, renovation or modification - requires a profound knowledge of technical and structural aspects, as well as a solid basis in historical and architectural subjects. Building research and conservation sciences help to unterstand historical and modern day methods of construction and technical tradition.
Objective
Of all the buildings which are going to be in use in the middle of our century, 80% are already existent. Therefore it will be a key challenge for future generations of architects to deal with renovation and modification of the built environment. In order to prepare for these requirements, knowledge in building research and conservation sciences are taught and trained on a real-life historic building. The methods of building research will help to understand the process of building and construction. Interpretation of the results and evaluation of the written sources as well as an analysis of the contexts will lead to first concepts for handling the buildings' substance. It is also possible to work on an architectural project. Topic of the autumn term 07 will presumably be the main building of ETH built by Gottfried Semper.
