Building in constancy: Building Existence of ETH Zurich
Bauen im Bestand: Der Baubestand der ETH Zürich
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:29:58
Abstract
Building in constancy requires a profound knowledge of technical-structural aspects, as well as historical, architectural aspects. Building research and conservation sciences help to unterstand historical and modern methods of construction. On an existing building, methods of building analysis and documentation will be trained in order to develop concepts for dealing with the buildings’ substance.
Objective
Of all the buildings which are going to be in use in the middle of our century, 80% are already existent. Therefore it will be a key challenge for future generations of architects to deal with renovation and modification of the built environment. In order to prepare for these requirements, knowledge in building research and conservation sciences are taught and trained on a real-life historic building. The methods of building research will help to understand the process of building and construction. Interpretation of the results and evaluation of the written sources as well as an analysis of the contexts will lead to first concepts for handling the buildings’ substance. It is also possible to work on an architectural project. Topic of the spring term 08 will presumably be the chemical laboratory of ETH built by Bluntschli & Lasius.
