The course teaches concepts and methodologies of sustainability assessment. A special focus is given to the social dimension and to social justice as a guiding principle of sustainability. The format of the course is seminar-like, interactive.

The course addresses environmental policies, focusing on new steering approaches, which are generally summarized as environmental governance. The course also provides students with tools to analyze environmental policy processes and assesses the key features of environmental governance by examining various practical environmental policy examples.

This course presents the basics of public policy analysis in relation to the environment. We present policy instruments, actors and processes both conceptually and empirically.For an additional credit point, students can write a term paper on an environmental topic applying concepts from environmental policy using qualitative content analysis.

The objective of this course is to analyse a concrete conflict in the context of species conservation. It is based on concepts from social sciences and natural sciences. The conflict will be examined from the perspectives of all affected stakeholders. The aim is to demonstrate how conflicts among stakeholders can be resolved to achieve a mutually agreed consensus.

Introduction of the concept of owner-and user-centered institutionalism and its application in the context of the sustainable use of natural resources. Interface between institutional rules and norms and use of natural resources such as water, forest, meadows, natural and cultural landscapes.

This course teaches the possibilities and limits of the law in order to protect natural resources and landscapes against harm and nuisance.
