Introductory lectures will introduce methods for non-destructive characterization and testing of wood and reinforced concrete. Following these lectures, practical sessions will be conducted both in the laboratory and outdoors, offering participants the chance to engage in hands-on measurements using a variety of state-of-the-art devices.
Forest and Landscape Products and services
Wald- und Landschaftsprodukte: Holzeigenschaften und -verwendung
Formulation of the design of a typology of goods and services, which can be offered in the context of forest and landscape. To be acquainted with the anatomical, technical and economical dimensions of wood. Theoretical and methodological basics to valuate forest and landscape products and services will be introduced in economic, political, juridical and socio-cultural perspectives.
Fundamentals of Wood Elaboration and Woodmachining
GL der Holzbearbeitung und -verarbeitung
Knowledge of the basics of wood machining and production of wood based materials. Knowledge of the most important production sequences in a wood machining company. Knowledge of the main applications of different timber choices, timber species and timber qualities.
Fundamental relationships between structure and properties of wood and wood-based materials are covered. Based on the hierarchical structure of wood, the course conveys aspects of nanostructural characterization and micromechanical analysis. In view of recent wood material developments, concepts for the assembly of advanced wood materials and cellulose-based materials will be demonstrated.
Introduction to Materials
Werkstoffe
In this introductory lecture, students gain basic knowledge on building materials like cement, concrete, metals, glass, wood, polymers, and bitumen, their manufacturing and processing, important properties and their application. Fundamental mechanical, thermal and optical properties are discussed and experimental ways for measuring, as well as numerical methods for predicting them, are depicted.
