Abstract

Fundamental physical properties and the reciprocal actions between the structure and the properties of wood and wood based materials, test methods for wood and wood based materials

Objective

On a global scale wood is one of the most important building materials. Knowledge of significant physical properties of wood and wood based materials as well as interactions between structure and properties are taught. This knowledge is fundamental for an appropriate use of wood and wood based materials.

Content

Following focuses will be taught: Composition of wood and wood based materials (chemical composition, anatomical structure of wood, structure of wood based materials) Physical properties (density, wood moisture, swelling and shrinkage, thermal properties, electrical properties, acoustical properties, optical properties, strength, durability)

Resources

Lecture Notes

Written lecture notes will be handed out. These also are available on the e-collection of the ETH.
