Current Trends in Orthopedics and Traumatology
Aktuelle Trends in der Orthopädie/Unfallchirurgie
Whereas in medicine empiric thinking influences the solution of problems, in science an analytical approach is preferred. The lecture course should contribute to a better understanding between both fields by means of actual examples of orthopaedic research and development. A live-transmission of an operation at the Schulthess Clinic will complete the course.
Biomechanics of Sports Injuries and Rehabilitation
Biomechanik von Sportverletzungen und Rehabilitation
This lectures introduces the basic principles of injury mechanics and rehabilitation focussing on sports injuries.

Biomechanik von Sportverletzungen und Rehabilitation
This lectures introduces the basic principles of injury mechanics and rehabilitation focussing on sports injuries.
The course gives an introduction into bone biology and provides an overview on current research methods and clinical approaches. Emphasis is put on skeletal development and metabolism, osteoporosis as well as fracture healing. Each topic is structured into three parts: basics, research and clinics.
Clinical Research
Klinische Forschung
This module provides basic knowledge for a critical study of literature closely related to clinical decision making and the basics of clinical research methodology.
Current topics in translational medicine presented by speakers from academia and industry.

Participants will be introduced into clinical development of medicinal products including diagnostics, medical devices, and drugs. They will learn how to develop a clinical strategy based on key characteristics of the product under development. Key considerations for supporting studies, endpoint development, and safety strategy will be discussed and applied.
Digital Biomarkers
Digitale Biomarker
The module “Digital Biomarkers” deals with the application of novel technologies (mostly wearable sensors) that enable the collection of digital health data.
Participants will learn all necessary steps to establish new digital measures for their own clinical research. They will get a comprehensive understanding of this new emerging field, will discuss the newest guidelines with authors from international societies, will have a chance to interact with digital pioneers, and will be enabled to develop a concept for their individual digital measure.
Digital Health Technology (DHT) enables new study designs, including better evidence generation for value-based health care. This module focuses on the preparation of a study synopsis incorporating a digital technology and/or modern study concept.
Fundamentals of Medicine and the Human Body
Grundbausteine Mensch
Fundamental principles of human medicine, Basic Life Support (BLS) and introduction to histology and microscopy.
Geriatrics
Später Lebenszyklus
Fundamentals and relevance of the aging process, as well as its biochemical, physiological and evolutionary basis. Insights into its individual as well as economic impact, including interventional and pharmacological treatment options.
Life Cycles and System Diseases
Lebenszyklen und Systemerkrankungen
This module focuses on special aspects of health and illness in the early and late life phases as well as diseases of whole organ systems. It includes special features of the pediatric, geriatric and rheumatological anamnesis.
Musculoskeletal System
Bewegungsapparat
Structure and function of the human musculoskeletal system including its major disorders (acute and chronic).
Translational Science is a cross disciplinary scientific research that is motivated by the need for practical applications that help patients. The students should apply knowledge they gained in the prior course during a team approach focused on one topic provided by the supervisor. Each student has to take a role in the team and label clear responsibility and contribution.
Precision Medicine is a new approach in health care aiming to deliver personalized prevention and treatment for human diseases, by taking into account individual differences in lifestyle, environment, and biology. This course consists of a series of theoretical lectures integrated with a final two-week practical part.
Tailored medical treatments based on disease characteristics but also on patients’ individual features is becoming clinical routine. Personalised medicine utilises genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors to optimise approaches in healthcare. The use of AI will be essential to enhance personalised medicine to improve patients’ journey from diagnosis to treatment and the outcome.
This module will selectively take up, repeat and expand on numerous contents from previous semesters. The students should have deepened or newly acquired basic histological, anatomical and pharmacological knowledge. They should also consolidate and deepen their knowledge of emergency care and be familiar with clinical pictures frequently encountered in emergency care.
Participants will be introduced into regulations and landscape including all stake holders. The different types of medicinal products are introduced including subsequent regulations. Participants apply the knowledge in different starting scenarios.
