In this course, social and cultural dynamics of international development cooperation are analysed, discussed, and connected to contemporary development cooperation activities and projects. Themes to be focused on include the impacts of colonisation in development cooperation, decolonisation, migration, gender, racism, and education.
The course is designed to increase awareness of how cultural perceptions and power structures have influenced society and our understanding of and practice in aid. It promotes alternatives to aid as linear and progressive Eurocentric narrative. The course draws on different theoretical perspectives and scrutinizes practical examples of aid interventions and similar initiatives.
Decntralization and local Governance in Development Cooperation

This course introduces into approaches to decentralisation and discusses concepts of good governance at the various levels. Based on concrete case studies from Africa and the Balkan the potential and limits of development cooperation interventions to support decentralization will be examined.
The course conveys basic knowledge about the M4P-project approach in development cooperation (Making Markets Work for the Poor). Important elements are: strategic framework of the M4P-concept; understanding systems and system change; sustainability and facilitation of system change; measurement and management of private sector promotion in development assistance.

This course offers an introduction to project cycle management (PCM). Case studies are used to deal with issues of project identification, project planning, project monitoring, and project evaluation. The lectures also aquaint with methods of data collection in the context of development projects.
