This course is designed for students who already possess the skills defined in level C1 of the European Framework Global Scale. It takes them towards level C2, with the aim to enhance their language proficiency in an academic environment. The programme is run in 2 parts, over 2 semesters.

This introduction to the literary genres of poetry, ballad, short story and novel will focus on a critical reading of selected samples by various authors from the 18th - 20th century. A morphological approach highlights the structural dynamics of literary texts, their inherent values and meaning.

The power that stories have over the audience's imagination has always proved one of the main pleasures of reading. In this course we shall consider some major works of English Literature dealing with the topic "story telling". We shall discuss narrative structures, the relationship between form and function, and explore how story-tellers control our reading experience.
