Abstract

This course is designed for students who already possess the skills defined in level C1 of the European Framework Global Scale. It takes them towards level C2, with the aim to enhance their language proficiency in an academic environment. The programme is run in 2 parts, over 2 semesters.

Objective

Linguistic targets: You will work towards the skills listed in level C2 of the European Global Scale, such as reading and understanding linguistically complex texts, and recognising implicit meaning; presenting clear and detailed descriptions of complex subjects, developing a point and rounding off with an appropriate conclusion; writing clear, smoothly-flowing essays, reports and summaries, selecting a style appropriate to the reader in mind; expressing ideas and opinions convincingly, without searching for expressions; participating actively in discussions and relating your contributions skilfully to those of other speakers. To this end, there will be a systematic focus on vocabulary building, on grammatical accuracy and word study, idiomatic expression, collocation, punctuation, listening and writing skills.

Content

Topics: The course will offer reading and discussion of thought-provoking texts from mainly non-literary sources such as the Guardian Weekly, the Time magazine, the New Scientist, The Economist and other materials. The texts are carefully chosen to provide up-to-date information on aspects of globalisation, lifestyle, communication, social issues, health, work, leisure and other interests. Class work will be interactive , encouraging group work, pair work, role play, and essay writing.
