Abstract

This course is suitable for students who possess the skills defined in level B2 of the Council of Europe Global Scale, and takes them towards level C1. The aim is to enhance students' oral and written competence for academic purposes.

Objective

In this course we shall work towards the skills listed in level C1 of the Council of Europe Global Scale, such as understanding longer and complex factual and literary texts; writing clear, well-structured text, expressing points of view at some length; talking about subjects related to your interests; presenting information and arguments for or against a particular point of view, participating actively in discussions in which you have to justify and sustain your opinions.

Content

Topics: Our language work will embrace themes of general interest and personal relevance, such as the American Dream, immigration and emigration, aspects of British fiction, the global economy, the media and communication. To this end, there will be a systematic focus on grammatical accuracy (tense review, active and passive forms, verbs, prepositions, recognition and correction of typical errors, etc.), vocabulary (word formation, synonyms & opposites, words easily confused, idioms & collocations, phrasal verbs, etc.), writing skills (narrative and description, formal & informal letters, notes & instructions, style & register, discourse markers and punctuation), oral expression, pronunciation and listening/interview skills.

We shall use the course book "New Headway Advanced" by Liz and John Soars, OUP, together with the workbook. Both items will be on sale in class, at a discount, at the beginning of term.
