Abstract

This course is suitable for students who already possess the skills defined in level C1 of the Council of Europe Global Scale. It takes them towards level C2, with the aim to increase their language proficiency in an academic environment.

Objective

Linguistic targets: Students will work towards the skills listed in level C2 of the European framework, such as reading and understanding literary and linguistically complex texts, and recognising implicit meaning; presenting clear and detailed descriptions of complex subjects, developing a point and rounding off with an appropriate conclusion; writing clear, smoothly-flowing essays, reports and summaries: expressing ideas and opinions convincingly, without searching for expressions, participating actively in discussions and relating their contributions skilfully to those of other speakers. To this end, we shall focus on difficult and ambiguous areas of grammar, phrasal verbs, vocabulary building and word study, idioms, difficult word pairs, collocation, reported speech, false friends etc.

Content

Topics: Our language work will embrace the areas of TIME, WORK and LEISURE as well as related cultural themes and concepts. We shall read and work on texts and articles from non-literary sources such as the TIME magazine, the GUARDIAN WEEKLY and others, and compare them with samples from contemporary and non-contemporary fiction. The carefully selected texts will offer historical and up-to-date information on a number of cultural issues related to the topics above and provide thought-provoking material for discussion, group work, pair work, role play, and essay writing.

Resources

Literature

Texts and articles for discussion and other materials can be downloaded from my virtual library every week. In addition, students will have to buy a workbook, Recycling Advanced English, revised edition, by Clare West, which will be sold in class at the beginning of term. They will also need to own a good monolingual dictionary or have access to on-line dictionaries.
