Quantum Mechanics and Solid State Physics II
Quantenmechanik und Festkörperphysik II
Solution and application of the Schrödinger equation for an electron in a Coulomb potential (the H atom problem). Energy bands in solids from the Nearly-Free-Electron and Linear-Combination-of-Atomic-Orbitals approaches. Band gaps, semiconductors and insulators. Solution of the Schrödinger equation for a harmonic oscilattor; vibrational properties of solids
Quantum Mechanics and Solid State Physics I
Quantenmechanik und Festkörperphysik I
In this course we study how the properties of solids are determined from the chemistry and arrangement of the constituent atoms, with a focus on materials that are not well described by conventional band theories because their behavior is governed by strong quantum-mechanical interactions.
