Architecture and Building Structures I
Architektur und Tragkonstruktionen I
In the major courses the students deal with architectural questions in relation to other subject areas.
Architecture and Building Structures II
Architektur und Tragkonstruktionen II
In the major courses the students deal with architectural questions in relation to other subject areas.
Architecture and Structure
Architektur und Tragwerk
The course is centered around a design exercise where the form should be the result of the flow of internal forces and the detailing concept combined with the quality of architectural space. The focus is on structural and load bearing issues with respect to realization implemented in an architectural design.

Structural Design
Tragkonstruktionen I
Determination of internal forces and description of structural behaviour of cable and membrane structures as well as arches and shell structures using method of graphical statics.
Building Structures II
Tragkonstruktionen II
Calculation of elastic deformations. Discussion of simple statically indeterminate systems. Analysis of bearing systems in architecture: models of calculation for bearing elements and systems. Introduction of the concepts of bearing safety and workability. Issues of loading, stability and safety. Masonry: material-based fundamental technology and dimensioning.
Building Structures III
Tragkonstruktionen III
Steel and timber construction: constructional determination of bearing elements, bearing structures and connections. Materially appropriate construction. Safety and workability. Formulae for the dimensioning of elements, issues of stability, formulae for the approximation of initial dimensions.
Building Structures IV
Tragkonstruktionen IV
Reinforced concrete: Constructional bases and hints on the formation of the most important bearing elements. Bearing resistance, safety and durability. Foundations: Reciprocity between building and the ground on which it stands. Soil qualities, issues of stability in grounding, bearing qualities and settling. Basic concepts for the dimensioning and design of foundations and columnar structures.

Force, Material, Form: Exploring Interdisciplinary Design
Kraft, Material, Form: Erforschen des interdisziplinären Entwerfens
This course is aimed at students of architecture and civil engineering from the 5th semester Bachelor or higher, who wish to practice and explore the design of structures in interdisciplinary groups. In the interplay between application and theory, the students design small structural objects in interdisciplinary teams and then investigate group dynamics relevant to design.

Force, Material, Form: History of Structural Design (Thesis Elective)
Kraft, Material, Form: Geschichte des Tragwerksentwurfs (Wahlfacharbeit)
Based on the content of the elective lecture, students decide with the docent on a topic to be examined individually. The examination of this topic is supervised by the docent and conducted as an elective project.

The goal of the course is to introduce students to Structural Design. The course fosters the development of a design thinking that emerges from the coexistence of a number of design parameters and performance criteria related to force flow, construction technologies, material use, and spatial qualities.
