This colloquium offers an opportunity to discuss recent and ongoing research and scientific ideas in the behavioral sciences, both at the micro- and macro-levels of cognitive, behavioral and social science.The colloquium features invited presentations from internal and external researchers as well as presentations of doctoral students close to submitting their dissertation research plan.

Within the colloquium current research papers in the area of behavioral studies are presented. Student participants gain insight into practical research in social sciences and write an own paper on one of the topics presented in the colloquium.

Teaching is a complex skill. The lecture comprises (a) presentations about the theoretical background of this skill, (b) discussions of practical aspects, and (c) practical exercises.

Teaching is also a craft. In this lecture, students get to know and, wherever possible, also practice practical aspects of the teaching profession within the framework of relevant theories rom the Learning Sciences.

Students work through the book “Lernwirksam unterrichten” (Felten/Stern) independently and answer the questions available online in preparation. In a one-hour discussion held shortly after the exam lesson, either individually or in small groups, findings from learning psychology relevant to teaching are discussed.

The students have to read the book "Lernwirksam unterrichten" from Felten/Stern and they have to answer questions. In individual or small-group sessions will be discussed how insights from learning research can inform classroom practice.

The students shall, either individually or in small groups, investigate a scientific question from the field of research on learning and instruction with relevance to one of the subjects having to be taught. This involves finding a research question, deriving a scientific design, developing the materials necessary for the research, collecting and analyzing data, and, finally, writing a report.

The focus will be on the book "Intelligenz: Grosse Unterschiede und ihre Folgen" by Stern and Neubauer. Participation at the first meeting is obligatory. It is required that all participants read the complete book. Furthermore, in two meetings of 90 minutes, concept papers developed in small groups (5 - 10 students) will be discussed.

This course looks into scientific theories and also empiricalstudies on human learning and relates them to the school.

Learning is a complex process. Knowledge is acquired not only through cognitive processes (e.g., repeated recall or reflection) but also through motivational and social processes. This lecture discusses and illustrates these diverse processes in the context of school-based learning.

In this seminar, future teachers will be trained to prepare and conduct excursions to out-of-school learning venues. For this purpose, excursions are offered at the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) in Birmensdorf.
