Abstract

Learning is a complex process. Knowledge is acquired not only through cognitive processes (e.g., repeated recall or reflection) but also through motivational and social processes. This lecture discusses and illustrates these diverse processes in the context of school-based learning.

Objective

Anyone wishing to be a successful teacher must first of all understand the learning process. Against this background, theories and findings on the way humans process information and on human behaviour are prepared in such a manner that they can be used for planning and conducting lessons. Students additionally gain an understanding of what is going on in learning and behavioural research so that teachers are put in a position where they can further educate themselves in the field of research into teaching and learning.

Content

Only those who understand how people learn can teach them successfully. This interactive lecture provides prospective teachers with a fundamental understanding of the diverse processes through which people acquire knowledge. The focus is primarily on cognitive, motivational, and social processes. In addition to providing a theoretical foundation, the lecture demonstrates how empirical studies can generate knowledge about teaching and learning. The course is taught using the flipped classroom format. This means that course materials are made available in video format prior to in-person sessions and are to be reviewed independently beforehand. During the in-person sessions, the material is explored in greater depth and discussed. In addition, students are guided during these sessions to apply the material to their own examples.
