"Pairi-daeza" is persian and means "a wall surrounding a garden". This term displays the initial point for the elective course series, which explains basic elements of landscapearchitecture: "boundary", "threshold", "water", in this semester "vegetation". The students will design an urban location using planting, which distinguishes space, density and time.

Following ‚peri’ and ‚threshold’, this semester engages with the topic ‚water’. The students interventions along the Wildbach, one of the rare open brooks of Zurich, should allow the water’s sculpting dynamic to become experiencable.

As part of an investigation concerned with the development of Pairi-daeza to the garden typology ‘Paradise’, this semester engages with qualities of doors, gateways and thresholds. For the Papierwerd-Areal in the center of Zürich the students will be asked to design a place, which functions as a gateway or threshold into the city.

As part of the ‘Doctoral Program in Landscape and Urban Studies’, the ‘Research Methods in Landscape and Civic Design' seminar offers PhD students at the D-Arch an application-oriented introduction into the variety of methodologies and tools available to conduct research on the (built) environment at the urban and territorial scale.

Advanced PhD candidates of urban studies, urban and landscape design and urban sociology report about their experiences and insights in the concrete application of methods utilized for their research and scientific publications. Discussion of ongoing individual work, methodological questions, critical perspectives on urban and landscape design and city's relation to society.
