Pairi-Daeza: Vegetation
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:14:10
Abstract
"Pairi-daeza" is persian and means "a wall surrounding a garden". This term displays the initial point for the elective course series, which explains basic elements of landscapearchitecture: "boundary", "threshold", "water", in this semester "vegetation". The students will design an urban location using planting, which distinguishes space, density and time.
Objective
Students' acquire the ability to read citylandscape subjectively. In lectures and excursions they will deal with the design tool „vegetation“, which is specific for landscape architecture, testing it in a short design project. Using trees and bushes, students of the elective transform an as yet undefined left-over space into an urban space of atmospheric quality for the people of the new commercial neighbourhood. They develop their ideas on the basis of an analysis of the location and an understanding of the typologies of landscape design: park and square. Model-making is considered essential as a means for developing as well as documenting ideas. The students communicate their ideas by way of a plan, to get familiar with the presentation modes of landscape architecture.
Content
The elective is part of a six-semester investigation concerned with the development of Pairi-daeza (Persian for "a wall enclosing a garden") to the garden typology 'Paradise'. The series explores the basic elements of landscape design. Following ‚peri' and ‚threshold' and ‚water', this elective deals with the topic ‚vegetation'. The students are asked to design a park or a square for the triangle Gleisbogen/Heinrich-strasse/Josefstrasse. Using groves as their main tool for the design they make space, density and time experiencable. The left-overs spaces in the immediate vicinity of Josefwiese is characterized by the rhythm of passing trains. What is attractive about this site is that from Wipkinger- and Lettenviaduct it can be viewed from above. It is intended to become part of the new community district that should develop due to the shops and studios planned under the arches of the viaduct. In a small series of lectures the typology of urban vegetation will be discussed. We advise students interested in the elective to visit the site before September because the area - a parking lot for the time being - is going to be altered as a result of the viaducts' development.
