Students develop and build a product from A-Z! They work in teams and independently, learn to structure problems, to identify solutions, system analysis and simulations, as well as presentation and documentation techniques. They build the product with access to a machine shop and state of the art engineering tools (Matlab, Simulink, etc).
Agile and User-Centered Innovation
Agile und nutzerzentrierte Innovation
For companies it is essential to realise products quickly, economically and in a customer-oriented way. In this context approaches to agile and user-centred product development such as Scrum and Design Thinking are increasing in importance. Compared to traditional product development methods, agile methods promise higher quality and customer satisfaction coupled with reduced expenditure.
Energy Carrier for the Mobility of the Future
Energieträger für eine Mobilität der Zukunft
The module includes the supply of the road mobility of the future with renewable energy. The generation, transport, processing, transfer of energy to the vehicles (refueling, charging) and the energetic evaluation are presented. Electricity, hydrogen, biogenic and synthetic fuels are considered.
Assistive technologies can increase the independence and quality of life of persons with disabilities. This hands-on, project-based assistive technology challenge exposes students to the user-centered design of a dedicated assistive technology solution adapted to the specific needs of a person with disability and prepares them for a career in the field of assistive and medical technologies.
Innovation Process
Innovationsprozess
The lecture focuses on the basics of agile product development, in which development processes are structured in the form of several short sprints. The lecture deepens the relevant technical and methodological knowledge for the implementation of the characteristic core activities: Design, Build, Test.
Innovation Project
Innovationsprojekt
The students are going through a product development process starting with the first idea to the functional product. The participants will learn to work on a complex development task in a team (4-5 pers.), to structure a given problem, to generate and evaluate ideas as well as the design and realization of the product with subsequent verification.
Cross-disciplinary collaboration between engineers and medical doctors is indispensable for innovation in health care. This course brings together engineering students from ETH Zurich and medical students from the University of Zurich to experience the rewards and challenges of such interdisciplinary work in a project based learning environment.
This module introduces various serial, digital and other innovative methods of industrial manufacturing and applied repair. Excursions to workshops and construction sites with a repair focus are included in the module. Contributions to the history of repair and design theory complement the thematic module.
This course focuses on the design, manufacture and testing of components produced using additive manufacturing (AM) technologies. The course includes a project based on a real-world challenges where students design, fabricate and iteratively optimize functional AM parts using an appropriate AM technology.

Economic and Legal Framework
Economic and Legal Frameworks
The subject area deals with the legal, normative market conditions. Different business models and legal tools that determine the current forms of production and services in the fields of architecture, construction, industrial design, and manufacturing are examined, including future scenarios.
Agile product development is gaining high interest in many industries. Still, only few hardware developing firms have adopted Agile approaches into their daily development work due to inadequate trainings. Within this course, students will be introduced to the culture and mindset behind Agile by solving a practical development task in a team of 4 students.
Engineering Tool: Reduction of Production Costs and Value Analysis
Ingenieur-Tool: Herstellkosten senken und Wertanalyse
Manufacturing costs are the largest challenge for manufacturing companies in high-wage countries. To reduce the manufacturing costs significantly, all areas of the product development process have to be taken into consideration. This tool course teaches the most important instruments for cost reduction in product development using concrete project and product examples.
Machine Elements
Maschinenelemente
Introduction to machine elements and mechanical systems as basics of product development. Case studies of their application in products and systems.
