Bachelor Thesis
Bachelor-Arbeit
The bachelor's thesis is the culmination of the program. The students develop, enhance, and demonstrate their methodological abilities to independently tackle and solve a given research problem. The thesis furnishes the students with their first major research experience, and is a further development of the work done in the basis courses, and usually, the focused study.
This course will provide an introduction to the fundamentals and the applications of combustion in energy conversion and nanoparticles synthesis. The content is highly relevant for technologies which cannot be electrified such as long distance aviation and shipping, and which will more and more rely on carbon-neutral synthetic fuels.
Ecological aspects of individual mobility
The course provides an introduction to the principles and applications of electrochemical energy conversion (e.g. fuel cells) and storage (e.g. batteries) technologies in the broader context of a renewable energy system.
Fundamentals of thermal sciences, linked to energy conversion
The course provides an introduction to the methods and tools for analysis of energy consumption, energy production and energy flows. Environmental aspects are included as well as economical considerations. Different sectors of the society are discussed, such as electric power, buildings, and transportation. Models for energy system analysis planning are introduced.
The course teaches to view local energy solutions as part of the larger energy system. Because it powers all sectors, local changes can have consequences reaching well beyond one sector. While we explore all sectors, we put a particular emphasis on mobility and its unique challenges. We not only cover engineering aspects, but also policymaking and behavioral economics.
The course describes and assesses the environmental performance of current and future mobility/transportation and transformation pathways towards sustainability. It focuses in particular on the future role of renewable synthetic chemical energy carriers from a technology point of view.
Future Relevance of IC engines for transportation and Power-on-Demand. Characteristic performance parameters, operating maps and duty cycles. Thermodynamic cycles and energetic optimization. In-cylinder flows, heat transfer, combustion modes, boosting and simulation methods. Hybrid powertrains, decentralized power/heat cogeneration and use of renewable/e-fuels.
Laboratory Practice
Labor-Praktika
Selected laboratory experiments in physics, mechanical and process engineering. With the Laboratory Training held during the fifth semester, the students learn how to handle and apply measurement methods and devices. Students are offered a diversified choice of laboratory experiments at least eleven of which must be completed. Five of the chosen experiments must be in physics.

Teamproject
Teamprojekt
Three students work on a scientifically relevant engineering problem and summarize the findings in a common research report.
Technology Potential: Powertrain and Systems
Technologie-Potenziale: Antriebs-/Fahrzeugtechnik
The module provides a foundation in the current situation and short- and middle-term development directions of powertrain and automotive engineering in the context of passenger & goods transport. Corresponding energy sources and resulting consequences for the energy system are addressed. Participants will be enabled to identify potentials of these technologies and apply them to concrete problems.
Thermo- and Fluid Dynamics
Thermo- und Fluiddynamik
Current advanced research activities in the areas of thermo- and fluid dynamics are presented and discussed, mostly by external speakers.
Introduction to the fundamentals of chemical thermodynamics and thermodynamics of mixtures.
