Everything is transformation. The world we live in is being increasingly densified, not only in terms of what is built but also of ecosystems, social interactions, economic interests, political relations. In this context, we must look seriously at the existing: What qualities are there? What is really obsolete? What can we enhance? How to start with what is already there?
In the autumn semester, we will approach the phenomenon of space through fundamental experiences with regenerative materials and «Nordic Light» to design a cultural centre on Louis Kahn's home island of Saaremaa in Estonia. In the spring semester, we work on the redensification of an industrial wasteland in Brunnen (CH) and focus on the themes of structure and place
Do we live a house?Or do we house a life? How. Do. We. Live.Do we know HOW we live? Do we know enough aboutHOW we live? HOW do things around us shape the way welive? HOW do we live the things around us? WHAT are theconditions around us? WHAT makes our habits? HOW dohabits change conditions?
In semester HS / III, a simple exercise will explore the development of the same program in the two different contexts of NEW-USE and RE-USE. On a given free plot versus a given build plot, the same project will be designed. In the FS / IV semester, the same simple exercise will test the results of the previous semester on a subsequent change.
Architectural Design III: A Forest Bath (A.Spiro)
Entwurf III: Ein Waldbad (A.Spiro)
We are going to design a bath in the nearby forest. You are going to acquire profound knowledge about structural concepts and work with contradictions and corresponding aspects between spacial structure and support structure. Further key aspects are materials and their inherent properties, light and the roof structure as such. The specific context of the forest strongly informs the design process.
This studio will be organized in 3+1 movements of three weeks each:Moments, Actor, Atmosphere, ConditionWe study 3 times a combination of five topics. All together we will by that collect an endless series of configurations of topics.

Architectural Design III: Fountain community. Cumünanza da bügl (R.Boltshauser)
Entwurf III: Brunnengemeinschaft. Cumünanza da bügl (R.Boltshauser)
The Lower Engadine is characterized, in addition to its favorable geographic location, by its particularly well preserved and quality building culture. We approach seven locations both analytically and in direct experience, with the aim of recognizing existing qualities, but also sustainable, future-oriented potentials in order to create urgently needed living space and lively village centers.
Architectural Design III: House / Home (E.Christ/Ch.Gantenbein)
Entwurf III: Haus / Zuhause (E.Christ/Ch.Gantenbein)
Housing is our studio's topic. We begin with a three-day excursion to Turin. Based on selected examples, we study Turin's urban architecture. Collectively we develop both a typology and an architectural vocabulary through inspired drawings. In the second half of the semester, we design a piece of furniture. This architectural object is the ideal house.
The course focuses on house and housing design in Switzerland. Analysis of existing houses, including their users and locations serve as a basis for the design of a housing complex. The course teaches basic principles of housing design as well as diving into topics such the relation between public and private, common and shared spaces and urban ecology.
The course focuses on a house and housing design in and around Zurich. Through the analysis of existing houses, including their users and locations, and by designing a housing complex, students learn about basic principles of housing design and the knowledge about issues of private/public, common spatial design for urban ecology.
Lecture "Construction III":The overall topic of the lecture series is “Construction – Elements of Architecture”. The lecture series gives the students an insight into different construction and design methods. The lectures are held by four different professorships in a block of 5 lectures in a row and showcasing their individual approach on design and architecture in general.

Architectural Design III: Ideal Architecture, Storage (E.Christ/Ch.Gantenbein)
Entwurf III: Ideale Architektur, Speichern (E.Christ/Ch.Gantenbein)
The time spent in the home office has led, among other things, to the accumulation of trillions of bytes. The question of storage arises almost automatically. Starting from historical architectures of storage in Switzerland (HS), we discuss social, political and ecological questions of contemporary globalised flows of goods and data (FS) and try answer through an architectural design.
Architectural Design III: Ideal Architecture, The Office (E.Christ/Ch.Gantenbein)
Entwurf III: Ideale Architektur, Das Büro (E.Christ/Ch.Gantenbein)
Based on selected buildings we study the basic principles of a timeless, urban architecture. Fieldwork is an essential part of the design. The selection of building includes various periods and purposes. Out of real houses we develop independent, ideal architectures.
Architectural Design III: Knowledge Keepers – A New gta Archive in the Hat Factory Welti (A. Spiro)
Entwurf III: Wissen hüten – Ein neues gta-Archiv in der Hutfabrik Welti (A.Spiro)
The ever-growing built fabric exerts high pressure on land reserves. Reframing existing structures will therefore be one of the major tasks of the architect in the future. Especially as many surprising innovations are rooted on the foundations of other structures or have occurred through a change of use, we want to engage in the topics of extension, alteration and refurbishment.
