The case study deals with complex, socially relevant problems that demand joint problem solving and mutual learning among science and society. The present case study focused on opportunities and risks of nanotechnological food products. The course taught how to structure complex problems, how to use empirical methods and how to do transdisciplinary research.

Transdisciplinary case study research deals with complex real world problems in a scientific manner and, therefore, relies on a strong methodological knowledge base and practical application skills. In this lecture first the theoretical foundations of embedded case study methods are presented. Second, the students acquire in depth knowledge with respect to selected methods.

This lecture deals with prospective assessments of emerging technologies as well as with the assessment of long-term environmental impact caused by today's activities.

In this course, interdisciplinary student teams work with societal partners to understand and address a real-world problem. Students design and implement a transdisciplinary, solution-oriented research project and communicate their findings to academic and broader societal audiences. In 2026, the focus is on climate change adaptation in Surselva, a mountain region in the Swiss canton of Grisons.
