This seminar begins with the question: what new ideas emerge when the objects of study are not the heroes and pioneers of modern architecture, nor the canonical buildings, but the various network of expertise, systems, and objects that make up modern life?

This course will aim to explore the Mediterranean, a region of great importance to trade, culture and politics over many centuries that continues to defy conventional academic and geographic categories. The course will aim to expand the existing discussion towards the inclusion of the built environment and cultural artifacts, and contemporary reverberations of the region’s history.

In the master program, the integration of architectural theory into the design process is offered as an individual achievement. On the basis of an intensive individual reading of theoretical texts the conventions of architectural practice shall be critically debated in a written paper. The theoretical perspective will be discussed in the midterm and/or final design studio criticism.

This course is offered by the Chair of Architectural Theory as an integrated discipline in the Design Studio "Tourism Behaviorology in Switzerland" and can only be booked as a joint bundle. The general aim of the course is to trace possible genealogies of a building / neighborhood / place in the Bernese Oberland and its larger network, through a picture-essay.

This course examines architecture through a set of lenses developed in Black studies, feminist technoscience theory, Black queer/trans studies. In asking questions around exclusion and belonging in the contemporary study of spaces, the course explores how constructs around race & gender have created interlocking forms of oppression that permeate the culture practice and discipline of architecture.
