Seminar Geschichte, Kritik und Theorie der Architektur

Lecturers & Examiners: Prof. Dr. Laurent Stalder
VVZ CR n/a

Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:10:39

Objective

The seminar aims at a critical analysis of both material and ideological conventions of the architectural practice. On the basis of the historical analysis the students will acquire instruments for a critical examination of the conditions of the current production of the built environment, in order to develop a sovereign theoretical position on the contemporary architecture.

Content

The seminar will deal with the conventions of the contemporary architectural practice. Starting from the material conditions of the production of space we will analyze the significance of the elements of architecture – e.g. threshold, frame, ceiling, column, step, stairs, or, wall, as well as devices and machines, furniture and pipes. The proposed topics should be researched out of a twofold, historical as well as systematic perspective. A detailed description of the syllabus can be found on the homepage of the professorship: www.gta.arch.ethz.ch/d/stalder/index.php
