Biological processes used in wastewater treatment, organic waste management, biological resource recovery. Focus on fundamental principles of biological processes and process design based on kinetic and stoichiometric principles. Processes include anaerobic digestion for biogas production and aerobic wastewater treatment.

Design project in biological wastewater treatment
Vertiefungsblock Siedlungswasserwirtschaft
Adapting a full scale wastewater treatment plant for approx. 100’000 p.e.: Derivation of an overall mass balance from operational data; design of the extension of the existing plant to include biological P removal but not nitrification / denitrification; design of the supporting chemical P precipitation; adaptation of sludge handling. Teamwork, writing of reports and presentation of results.
Technical systems are investigated in projects with experimental measurements and numerical modeling. The students learn how to answer given questions with target oriented methodologies.
The course is organized in the form of seminars held by the students. Topics selected from the core disciplines of the curriculum (water resources, urban water engineering, material fluxes, waste technology, air polution, earth observation) are discussed in the class on the basis of scientific papers that are illustrated and critically reviewed by the students.
Environmental Impact Assessment
Umweltverträglichkeitsprüfung
Focus of the course are the method, the process and content of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) as well as the legal bases and methods for compiling an environmental impact study (EIS). Using examples, a comprehensive view of the EIA is made possible by means of excursions. In the frame of a project the process of am EIA will be workt out by the students.
Introduction to Urban Water Management
Siedlungswasserwirtschaft GZ
Introduction to urban water management (water supply, urban drainage, wastewater treatment, sewage sluge treatment)
Introduction to urban water management (water supply, urban drainage, wastewater treatment, sewage sludge treatment). Introduction to Urban Water Management is a self-study course.
Systematic introduction of material balances, transport processes (kinetics, stoichiometry and conservation), ideal reactors, residence time distribution, heterogeneous systems, dynamic response of reactors, parameter identification, local sensitivity, error propagation, and Monte Carlo simulations. Introduction to real-time control (PID controllers). Extensive numerical simulations with coding.
Urban Water Management II
Siedlungswasserwirtschaft II
