Modeling of Human-Environment Systems: Introduction to various modeling methods

Modellierung von Mensch-Umwelt-Systemen: Einführung in die verschiedenen Modellierungsmethoden

701-0656-00L 2006S , 2007S , 2008S 3 Credits BSC D-USYS

This lecture provides an overview of existing modeling methods for Human-Environment Systems. The term "model" is defined, model classifications and the areas of applicance of several methods (e.g. system dynamics, multi-agent systems, spatial modeling) are discussed. Goal is not to personally program models, but to be able to judge which type of model is suitable for which research questions.

The students develop research projects on climate change adaptation in which they combine and apply quantitative and qualitative methods for data collection and analysis. The students identify political, economically and socially acceptable adaptation measures and thus also evaluate the social and ethical dimensions of climate risk analysis and adaptation.
