This lecture deals with specific aspects of the latest mycologicl research. Molecular mechnasims of mating type definition in oomycetes, zygomycestes, ascomycetes and basidiomycetes are discussed. Mutualistic and antagonsitic symbiosis of fungi with insects and plants as well lichen symbiosis are presented.

Introduction to the biology, systematics and ecology of the important fungal groups. The participants will study primarily fungal materials that they collect during field excursions or that they isolate in the laboratory.

Approximately 50% of fungal species derive their nutrition as parasites or as mutualists from plants or animals. This lecture focusses on structural and functional peculiarities of a range of antagonistic and mutualistic fungal symbioses (plant-, insect- or nematode pathogens, endosymbioses of insects, mycorrhizae, Geosiphon, lichens) and on their ecological significance.
