Science aims at objective descriptions of reality, although every description seems to take a specific perspective. An absolute point of view without a particular perspective may not even be thinkable. Looking at different conceptions of objectivity, the seminar will discuss what this problem means for the claim of the sciences.

This introductory lecture presents and discusses key topics in the philosophy of science. Topics covered include scientific explanation, causality, natural laws, and scientific realism. In addition to philosophical problems in quantum mechanics and evolutionary theory, the lecture concludes with a discussion of the limits of science.
