Objectivity and Perspectives
Objektivität und Perspektiven
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 16:21:45
Abstract
Science aims at objective descriptions of reality, although every description seems to take a specific perspective. An absolute point of view without a particular perspective may not even be thinkable. Looking at different conceptions of objectivity, the seminar will discuss what this problem means for the claim of the sciences.
Objective
The participants shall learn how to deal with foundational philosophical questions. In an interdisciplinary context, they will be guided to reflecting on objectivity and perspectives in the sciences.
Content
Absolute objectivity without any perspective seems not only impossible, but not even conceivable as a concept: Every view of the world takes a particular perspective, and the notion of a perspective-free view is a contradictio in adiecto. This poses a particular challenge to the self-image of the sciences, which, after all, strive for objective descriptions of reality. With regard to different conceptions of objectivity, the seminar will discuss what it means for the sciences to be constrained to always adopt a particular perspective. In view of post-truth and relativism, it will also be discussed to what extent inner-worldly standards for truth and objectivity could be established in view of the assumption that an absolutely objective standard is not even conceivable. The discussion will be based on recent (and predominantly English) research texts made available via Moodle.
