This course provides profound knowledge about electromagnetic waves. Various types of materials, nonlinear and resonant effects, and antenna applications are discussed.
Fields and components I
Felder und Komponenten I
Introduction to electromagnetic field quantities, formulation of Maxwell's equations and its solutions for material interfaces as well as for free space. Electric and mechanic energy conversion are treated as well as energy densities and energy transport (Poynting vector) of the EM field. The relationship between EM field theory and circuit theory is discussed.
Fields and components II
Felder und Komponenten II
Building upon general Maxwell's theory treated in the lecture "fields and components I" the concepts are now further developed and applied to transmission lines, waveguides, antennas and electromechanical systems.
First half of the semester: Introduction to the main methods of numerical optimization with focus on stochastic methods such as genetic algorithms, evolutionary strategies, etc.Second half of the semester: Each participant implements a selected optimizer and applies it on a problem of practical interest.
