Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:19:41
Abstract
Building upon general Maxwell's theory treated in the lecture "fields and components I" the concepts are now further developed and applied to transmission lines, waveguides, antennas and electromechanical systems.
Objective
Understanding of the behavior of electromagnetic energy both in wave propagation in free space and on transmission lines as well as in electromechanical systems.
Content
Electromagnetic waves: wave equation and its solutions, wave propagation in layered media, oblique incidence on dielectric interface, incidence on good dielectric, incidence on good conductor, propagation constant, wave impedance, phase velocity, group velocity, polarisation, standing waves. Guided waves: TEM transmission lines, characteristic impedance, impedance transformation and Smith chart. Rectangular waveguide, modes, characteristic impedance, circular waveguide, dielectric waveguide. Multiports: impedance matching, impedance and admittance parameters, ABCD parameters, scattering parameters. Radiation: scattering of EM fields, nearfield, farfield, electric dipole, antenna parameters, basic antennas. Electromechanical energy conversion: electro-mechanic systems, linearised equivalent networks, system equations, inductor-magnetic field-mass systems.
