This lecture course refers to the ethics of happiness. The concept of happiness, its presuppositions and the scope of an ethics of happiness will be analysed. Starting from the Aristotelian ethics of virtue the most important positions in moral philosophy will be discussed and tested.

After a discussion of some ambiguities in the concept of freedom, this lecture course analyses the concept of rational desires and the motivation of moral actions. Kant’s theoretical and practical philosophy will play an essential role in this investigation. In addition to a critical discussion of the current debate about free will, we will test Kant’s understanding of freedom.
