Part I of this course covers the energy-related topics in this two-semester course. The importance of energy to life and our modern culture is explored and placed in the perspective of the ongoing energy transition in the context of necessary and urgent decarbonization efforts. How much energy do we need and how can it be provided in a way that enables a sustainable existence?

This second part of the lecture on "Energy and Environment in the 21st century" covers on one side the state of human civilization and its devastating impacts on the environment. On the other side we try to find ways into sustainability. Can natural science, economics, social sciences or philosophy help to find scientific measures and ethical guidelines to stay within the planetary boundaries?

Introduction to particle sources and accelerators.Theory of particle interaction with matter and signal formation.Basics and concepts of particle detectors.Momentum reconstruction, calorimetry and particle identification techniques.Simulation methods, readout electronics, trigger and data acquisition.Examples of key experiments.
