This course introduces ethical theories used in the justification of the application of biotechnologies. An overview of key bioethical questions concerning the moral status of humans and questions regarding human nature will provide the background to critically reflect on specific bioethical topics such as informed consent, euthanasia, reproductive medicine, enhancement and stem cell research.

Students are given the opportunity to present drafts of their own master's thesis and discuss them within the framework of the colloquium. It does not matter whether students are in the preparatory phase or already in the midst of the writing process. The seminar examines the current "crisis of trust" in science, technology and politics. First, philosophical concepts of trust and mistrust will be analyzed. Then, examples such as climate skepticism and algorithmic opacity will be explored to discuss the causes of trust erosion and its societal consequences.
