The Roman God Vulcan, God of fire, volcans and metalwork has inspired the imagination since Antiquity. In view of an exhibition curated by Linda Schädler, Berit Seidel and Philip Ursprung at the Graphische Sammlung, the lecture will discuss various issues, ranging from labor, geology, travel, and, of course, art and architecture. In autumn 2024, two exhibitions take place in Zurich focusing on Switzerland and its colonial interdependencies. In the seminar, this topic will be addressed using the Graphische Sammlung ETH Zürich as an example. The students will research a selection of works from the collection, read specialized texts and discuss the jointly visited exhibitions.

The Graphische Sammlung ETH Zürich owns over 150 prints by James Turrell. A selection of these will be shown in an exhibition in autumn 2024. In the seminar, the development of an exhibition is explained on the basis of this concrete project. The students learn about the artist's work, read specialist literature and conceive various forms of exhibition displays.

Since the 1990s, there is a vivid discourse on “Artistic Research” – an artistic approach, which is characterized by different interconnections to other fields of research. In the seminar, we will read a selection of texts and will – in artist’s studios or at the Graphische Sammlung – discuss with artists how they would define “Artistic Research” and what strategies they use.

Using case studies and texts, the seminar introduces students to the topic of authorship before and after the advent of AI, and explores the concept of authorship in art and architecture.

The use of digital media is taken for granted today. And yet drawing, which has been regarded as an expression of thought since the Renaissance, has retained its place in art and architecture. In this seminar, we will discuss the relevance of drawing between observation and creation, view works of art and engage in conversation with artists.

In 2025, the Graphische Sammlung ETH Zürich will be showing Picasso's prints with a view to his friendship with Georges Bloch. We take up the impulse and playfully develop other possible focal points in the seminar. What is Picasso's relevance today? What critical questions arise? Different contextualisations and exhibition displays will be tested and discussed.
