Abstract

The use of digital media is taken for granted today. And yet drawing, which has been regarded as an expression of thought since the Renaissance, has retained its place in art and architecture. In this seminar, we will discuss the relevance of drawing between observation and creation, view works of art and engage in conversation with artists.

Objective

In this seminar, participants gain an overview of the diverse field of drawing in art and architecture, from design sketches and works of art to architectural fantasies. Students learn about important theories of drawing, including historical perspectives, and familiarise themselves with the function and forms of expression of drawing. By studying works of art together (including those in the Graphische Sammlung ETH Zürich) and by discussing with artists about their approach, they learn to reflect on the relevance of drawing in their own practice and in relation to art. Their findings culminate in a final paper, which can be text-based or visual.

Content

The disegno (drawing, the art of drawing) was an important concept in Renaissance art theory and was central to Giorgio Vasari's (1511-1574) ‘Introduction to the Arts of Architecture, Sculpture and Painting’. There, it encompassed the inspiration of artists, a form of workshop organisation and a means of communication with clients. Based on this treatise, we will read and discuss other theories of drawing in the seminar. This examination of texts will be complemented by direct engagement with works in the Graphische Sammlung ETH Zürich, where we will look at drawings, sketchbooks and architectural design sketches together and will discuss them. We will also talk to artists about their approach and ask what differences there are between artistic and architectural drawing. What significance and function does drawing have today? Why has this form of expression not become obsolete despite digital media? And finally: what are the advantages of drawings for one's own architectural or artistic practice?
