Introductory lectures will introduce methods for non-destructive characterization and testing of wood and reinforced concrete. Following these lectures, practical sessions will be conducted both in the laboratory and outdoors, offering participants the chance to engage in hands-on measurements using a variety of state-of-the-art devices.
The course on Advances in Building Materials provides an introductive overview of the needs and future of materials science in the building sector. Focus topics concern sustainability, durability, thermal insulation, coatings, sealants, adhesives, flame retardancy and the future perspective and developments of concrete and wood with regard to smart material development and ecological concerns.
This course explores molecular and microstructural design principles that enable adaptive functions and enhanced properties in biological and bio-inspired materials. It covers out-of-equilibrium molecular mechanisms and design principles affecting mechanical, optical, and surface properties. Students learn how these principles apply to synthetic systems, linking structure to performance.
The course Wood Processing conveys knowledge on the technological properties of wood and wood-based materials as well as on industrial processes for the fabrication of a vast variety of wood products and covers new developments in the field of digital technologies.
Fundamental relationships between structure and properties of wood and wood-based materials are covered. Based on the hierarchical structure of wood, the course conveys aspects of nanostructural characterization and micromechanical analysis. In view of recent wood material developments, concepts for the assembly of advanced wood materials and cellulose-based materials will be demonstrated.
Introduction to Materials
Werkstoffe
In this introductory lecture, students gain basic knowledge on building materials like cement, concrete, metals, glass, wood, polymers, and bitumen, their manufacturing and processing, important properties and their application. Fundamental mechanical, thermal and optical properties are discussed and experimental ways for measuring, as well as numerical methods for predicting them, are depicted.
Materials Lab Exercises
Werkstoffe Laborpraktikum
Introduction into the basic and practical knowledge of important building materials and testing methods.
Materials in Civil Engineering I
Werkstoffe im Bauwesen I
