With the term circular, we adopt two building principles: we design houses that only have to last one generation and not a hundred years, and we assume that the material is more durable than the construction. In this way, we design tailor-made houses that can be dismantled after thirty years and reassembled anew and differently elsewhere.

In this semester we investigate transformations of anonymous post-war office and commercial buildings into residential buildings. The semester will be carried out in cooperation with the Professorship for Sustainable Building of Guillaume Habert and the artists Taiyo Onorato and Nico Krebs.

How do we want to live? Hardly any building task in architecture is so fundamentally and so strongly determined by conventions as housing. The focus of the work in the studio is the critical and experimental examination of new forms of living in different climatic regions of Switzerland.

In the design studio, we expose ourselves to the elements and ask how architecture can arise from the intense sensual experience of one of the four elements. In so doing, it provokes a preoccupation with simple constructive solutions and a reflection on the hard climatic boundary between interior and exterior space.

From a circular perspective, we will be looking at hybrid steel buildings. With its rich history of local iron production, Delémont serves as a context for considering circular principles: We are looking for the architectural qualities and aesthetic potential in housing that emerge from considering material flows and ecological cycles.

This semester, we focus on limestone, its extraction and processing, and its role as a load-bearing component in structural construction systems. In the cities of Solothurn, Olten and Brugg, we develop floor plans for living and seek out the architectural qualities and aesthetic potential that arise from considering material processes and temporal cycles.

On the basis of various construction sites in Switzerland, we try to understand and use the potential of locally available resources and their by-products. This includes natural stone, metal, gravel, sand, clay, gypsum and wood as well as recyclable or directly reusable materials in the existing building stock.How can we make the origin of local and global materials visible in the building?

Why do some buildings last longer than others? What makes architectural beauty last longer? Why is open architecture more permanent than functionally determined architecture? How do we guarantee social sustainability? When are projects economically sustainable? Durability is the goal of a more sustainable construction. The age of a house determines significantly use and consumption of resources.

We engage with sandstone, its extraction and processing methods, and its role as a load-bearing material within structural and constructive systems. In the cities of Fribourg and St. Gallen, we develop residential floor plans and explore the architectural qualities and aesthetic potentials that emerge from an examination of material processes and temporal cycles.

As part of the trilogy on Ticino, this semester we are asking about the permanent. Natural stone will be revisited as a sustainable, resistant building material in the search for long-lasting urban and architectural forms. We design spaces that can be appropriated by future generations. The house is to be regarded as a dwelling open to all uses.

In the semester, we ask: is there also an ecological form of temporariness? Temporary architectures reflect our growing need for lightness, freedom, independence, and flexibility. Their provisional nature, speed, adaptability, and simplicity seem much more in line with increasing mobility and multiple lifestyles.

Architecture embodies duration and time. Material, construction and use have different temporalities and dates of decay. The elective is about the question of what lasts, how does architecture choreograph everyday life, what does "ageing well" mean, and what prolongs durability? The aim is to work on a joint collection of texts and representations on durability.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Swiss women's right to vote in 2021, an experimental ephemeral structure will be designed and constructed within the framework of a seminar in the spring semester and a subsequent elective work over the summer, which will use the Münsterhof in an intelligent, sensitive and surprising way. The installation will be built in September.
