Abstract

Why do some buildings last longer than others? What makes architectural beauty last longer? Why is open architecture more permanent than functionally determined architecture? How do we guarantee social sustainability? When are projects economically sustainable? Durability is the goal of a more sustainable construction. The age of a house determines significantly use and consumption of resources.

Objective

- Theoretical and conceptual understanding of the topic and its implementation in an architectural project; - basics of housing construction, - Development of alternative forms of living - Constructive knowledge - Experimental visualizations - Theory of the Second Modern

Content

Durability, strength and durability have always been among the basic characteristics of architecture. We associate it with massive, heavy buildings that have existed for centuries and are of great importance. On the other hand there are buildings made of light constructions and transient materials. Such houses can also exist for a long time if they are regularly maintained, maintained and repaired. The spectrum of our designs ranges from tent-like structures for nomads and their ecologically sustainable way of life, to houses made from recycled components to buildings that, thanks to solid construction, evade decay without maintenance. Particular attention is paid to the material of the house, its constructive structure and the timeliness of the project. In the semester we design permanent architectures in which you can live and work. We implement the projects in urban heterogeneous locations whose future urban development is still undetermined. Our houses are new urban building blocks for Schlieren, Opfikon and Dübendorf. The semester takes place in cooperation with the professorship Guillaume Habert and the artist duo Taiyo Onorato and Nico Krebs (tonk.ch). In the first three weeks of the semester, students develop the narratives of their designs using miniatures. In workshops with TONK, experimental pictures of the projects are created. Large-scale models of relevant details are used for constructive research. The students of this design can live for a week in the mock-up "vacancy - no vacancy" on the roof terrace of the HIL. It becomes the venue for discussions on topics of the Second Modern Age.
