Introduction to Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics

Einführung in die Chemie und Physik der Atmosphäre

102-0625-00L 2005W , 2006W , 2007W , 2008W 2 Credits BSC D-BAUG

This lecture offers a compact introduction to atmospheric chemistry and physics. It provides a basic understanding of the composition of the atmosphere and important dynamical and chemical processes. Several topics of environmental importance are explored including summer smog, stratospheric ozone depletion, and climate change. Simple modelling approaches are also introduced.

The course provides an overview of tropospheric chemistry addressing issues from global to urban scale. It provides a basic understanding of processes and discusses recent laboratory studies, field and satellite measurements, and numerical modelling. The topics include photochemistry and aerosols, emissions and deposition, and fundamentals of the atmospheric nitrogen, sulfur and methane cycles.
