Aquatic Ecology (Incl. Two Identification Courses)
Aquatische Ökologie (inkl. zwei Bestimmungskursen)
This course combines Limnology (the study of inland waters in its broad sense) with ecological and evolutionary concepts. It deals with rivers, groundwater and lakes. This course contains a lecture part, an experimental part, two determination courses (aquatic invertebrates and algae) as well as excursions.
This course builds on Aquatic Ecology I and cannot be taken separately. It aims to extend the covered concepts and apply them to natural and experimental systems. The course contains research projects, a 1-day excursion to a lake as well as a 3-day excursion to rivers.
This course examines the ecology and evolution of macroparasites and their hosts. Students explore parasite diversity, life cycles, adaptations, and host–parasite interactions. Applied topics include the role of parasitoids in biocontrol and the relevance of macroparasites in human health.
Practical Course in Environmental Biology (Block Days)
Praktikum Umweltbiologie (Blocktage)
This course aims at developing research skills in environmental biology. Students carry out small research projects in terrestrial and aquatic ecology, ecological genetics, and population biology. Students analyse their data statistically and present the results both orally and in written reports.
